Online Writing Group to Go on Hiatus

Greetings, Writers,

Please read carefully.

The prompt for May 2023 is:

We're calling the prompt "Last Call" because it will probably be our last one ever, for this writing group.

That's correct - May is the final month for our Online Writers Group. 

Your story does not have to be about last calls. Just write a story of about 500 words on any topic you wish, fact, fiction or whatnot (but not poetry). 

This story should be the best one you can write, 

the one you want us to remember you by. 

Make it count.

You may send in your story any time, but as usual no later than May 22, 6 PM EDT.

Comments and feedback on all the pieces are requested.

The blog will go offline sometime in June. Enjoy while you can.

It's winter and, until further notice, semi-quarantine times continue in Central New York. Maybe you miss writing and getting together in person at Dunham Public Library to hear and critique each others' stories. I know I do, and we hope to resume that in the future.

While our host library is observing Covid protocols (currently closed except for curbside pickup as of this month), be assured that some of our writers are busily honing their craft.

If you've tried, then you know that submitting your work to traditional publishing houses can be a demoralizing and grueling process. There's a lot of competition. Few get lucky enough to be granted a hard copy book contract for years of work.

An interesting phenomenon is taking place in publishing, and it's more than blogging, more than self-publishing on Amazon and the like. 

Thanks to the internet, online novels are the latest thing. Six of us members of Whitesboro Writers wrote a book, mostly via email, and we have recently begun to publish it in weekly installments on a dedicated blog, free of charge, to anyone who wants to read it. The "PpwN" project began 5 years ago, and continues to evolve. Kindly take some time to visit our book at this link:

PpWN, Our Group-Written Novel, update as of November 2020

PpWN is being published in weekly installments on its official fan site, starting in November 2020. You can read it here for free.

The project began early in 2016. Six of us got together and began what would be a real adventure in communal writing.

PpWN is fiction, a historical fantasy novel of large scope, like a saga. It's about a chess set named RICHESSE, which was created for the purpose of bringing peace to the planet, one conflict at a time. It was given magical powers by a MAGE, and then set off on its mission. In the course of the book, RICHESSE undergoes internal as well as external challenges that hamper its work. 

Each writer invented his and her own characters and set them in various time periods from ancient civilization, to Persia, to medieval France, to England, and to Medina, NY (where most of the plot takes place). It reaches further via time travel to Nazi Germany and beyond. To aid in moving the plot forward, the plot is divided into a prologue, 5 main sections called "books" and an epilogue.

If you're wondering whether PpWN is a typo, no, it isn't. It's a long story on how that came to be, and if interested, you can read all about it on our  PpWN Official Fan Site.

The fan site, which is continually being developed, contains prequels to the novel, information about our collective endeavor, author bios and much more. We hope you will visit, read, and leave comments. 

News from Whitesboro Writers Group

Our previously in-person public writing group has just completed two years of online activity. We have found these monthly flash-fiction exercises to be enjoyable, and we invite you to view our creative efforts (and the feedback we offer one another) here:  Whitesboro Online Writers.  (If you're looking for a writing group, consider joining in the fun!)

There is also another group effort afoot. Six members of Whitesboro Writers (including one out-of-state author) under the pen name J. Adoube  have co-written a full-length novel called PpWN (no, that's not a typo, and yes, it is pronounced "pawn") from January 2016 - November 2019. This was, for the most part, a project that was conducted through email and a private Facebook group. After many revisions, we published the e-book in November 2019. You can still purchase it through Amazon for the low price of 2.99 until the end of November, 2020.

We have been writing numerous prequels, spin-offs and sequels since publication, and have decided that instead of publishing all of these as e-books, we are now in the process of moving the whole project, including the entire novel, into its own, dedicated fan site.

We plan to serialize the book in weekly increments, but  you can start now with one of the prequels. It's a novelette entitled The Gambler's Tale, which tells the story of PpWN's narrator before the book begins.

We have been discussing the writing of mysteries and find that it can be very idiosyncratic - not necessarily just murder mystery, but the inherent mystery in the stories that we write. What is it that we do not know and how is that ok? If you are feeling so inclined, how about trying your own mystery story for the group's next meeting?

Writers Honoring Veterans- 2017- Recap and Photos

Project Coordinator Brian Michael Miga

Ten local veterans were recently honored for their service to our country at a reception in the New Hartford American Legion.

A good turnout!

The project, "Writers Honoring Veterans - 2017" was masterminded by local attorney Brian Michael Miga. Last spring, Brian put out feelers to local writers and the public through the Utica OD and Veteran's organizations, hoping to garner interest in the project. Several volunteers donated substantial amounts of  time to conduct personal interviews with the vets and/or or their families, to photograph memorabilia, do research and eventually write the presentations for the individual tributes.

The project culminated on November 7, 2017, at which time the participating writers presented bound books detailing each individual veteran's  personal military experiences to the veterans who were able to attend, or to their family members if not. A sizable crowd of well-wishers and veteran leaders attended the festivities.

In addition, soft-cover anthologies containing all ten tributes were printed and will be given to various project participants, local schools and at least one US Armed Forces venue.

A copy of the anthology will be donated to the Dunham Public Library for anyone who is interested in viewing and reading the stories of these men and women who served the United States during World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, and the more recent Mid-East conflicts.

This is community spirit and collaboration at its best. Congratulations and thanks to Brian, the writers and especially the veterans whose stories will now be shared with family, friends and the general public.

We have had an amazing mix of new and familiar faces at our summer meetings, and have not had specific assignments or challenges. That does not mean we have not had very enjoyable and informative discussions about writing.

This is a wonderful time to bring in ideas for something you have been wanting to begin or something you are stuck on. The group is always a good sounding board for ideas.

PLOTTERS INK FICTION WRITING GROUP

Monthly meeting downstairs in the Dunham Public Library Board Room.

As our group matures into its 4th year, we've relaxed the boundaries quite a bit, leaving room for personal choice each and every month. The rule of thumb is to select a specific GENRE each time. Please identify what that genre is - it may not be obvious to anyone but you. Here are your choices:

Biographical/Historical… Dystopia… Ethnic… Horror… Humor… Mystery… Science Fiction…Travel…Urban Myth… Western…Young Adult…or Writer’s Choice: (i.e., anything not on the list as long as it’s fiction). Facilitated by CJ Alexander.

Please bring copies so we can read along with you as you share your story.

Group members participate in area open mics, hold an annual evening of member’s readings, and publish short works monthly in the Rural Star. UTICA WRITERS CLUB 

Utica Writers Club monthly meeting at 6 PM in the Kirkland Library, Clinton, NY.

Meetings are conducted in "round table" style, in which member and visitor readings are presented to the group for constructive comments. All varieties of writing, regardless of genre, are discussed and encouraged by the Club.

New officers will be elected at this meeting.

The Monday Writers Group – held in the Boardroom of the Whitesboro Dunham Public Library  - is a group of amateur writers of all ages and skill levels. Writing assignments should be prose, either fiction or non-fiction, approximately 400 words or the side of one page. The writing prompts for this month are either THE ROOMMATE or OLD BARN.
