With four months left in the writing year, we continue exploring the different "archetypes" selected by our group members last fall. For September, our task is to depict the personality of a SAINT or its opposite type, the SINNER.
Remember, writers, that we strive to show some quirks, or nuance, within the archetype we're portraying. If we stick to the classic definitions, we will be presenting boring stereotypes. In real life, nobody always acts "in character", i.e., from one main trait only. To make your person interesting, show him or her with "flaws", or some behavior that is out of character, if possible. Make us care about these people!
As an example, if you choose to depict a SAINT, you could include some habit that is decidedly unsaintly - such as an addiction that he or she reverts to in private. On the other hand, if you're describing a SINNER, does that person have a redeeming quality? Perhaps he or she is a great cook, or repairs kids' bicycles for free...well, you get the gist.
A third option is to blur the lines between the two extremes. The main point is to have fun with it!
Some of us in the Plotters Ink group have opted to continue developing our unique characters, bringing them more to life with each passing month. We will present the characters' full stories on a NEW BLOG dedicated to these stories at the end of the year. It's not too late to begin your character's saga - jump in at any time, writers!
As always, each month we limit our stories to ONE SIDE of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper, and using nothing smaller than an 11 point font. Please bring 10 copies of your story so that everyone present can follow along as you read your story aloud. Feedback and suggestions will be provided after each reading. Those who wish to publish their stories on our blog may do so by sending them in a .doc attachment to whitesborowriters@gmail.com.
